Beth Molloy

Bootham School Sixth Former, Beth Molloy thought she’d lost out on her summer application for a Nuffield Placement, which provides funding for successful applicants to take on work experience in a science laboratory.  Undeterred, she decided to chase them up and was told that she could have the funding if she could secure her own placement.  Within 24hrs she had nailed the offer of an internship at Leeds University.

She has now returned to School having worked the summer in the Endothelial Cell Biology Unit in the Molecular & Cellular Biology department (Faculty of Biological Sciences) under the supervision of Dr Vas Ponnambalam.  Shelearnt how to culture, thaw and look after cells from two lines: a breast cancer line and a prostate cancer line.  Beth will present her project alongside other Nuffield Placement students on the 4th October at the Nuffield Poster Evening in York.  Beth worked alongside a number of PhD students and is now even listed under the Alumni section of the department’s website!

Head of Physics at Bootham, Kirsten Cooper, said:

This has been an amazing experience for Beth and will hopefully be a help towards her application to study Natural Science at Cambridge which goes off later this autumn.
